Memory foam is graded, or rated, by four different characteristics. There is weight, or the amount memory a mattress has; the ILD rating, how hard or soft the mattress is; resilience, how springy the mattress is; and lastly tensile, or how much the mattress can be stretched. All of these characteristics in the correct proportion will give each sleeper the best mattress depending on the sleeper’s unique needs that she/he would need. The best memory foam mattress will not even need a box spring. It could be laid on a flat concrete floor and be just fine. What if a person has a perfectly good mattress and they want the benefits of memory foam without spending an arm and a leg on a memory foam mattress?
There is a solution for people with a perfectly good mattress, the memory foam mattress topper or memory pad. These pads are cheaper in price and they work with a person’s current mattress to give them the added support that they need. They are graded by the same characteristics as a mattress, but they can cause a problem with the mattress being too thick. A standard sheet set will only fit a mattress that is 10 inches thick. When looking at a mattress topper it is important to keep that in mind while they shop. All in all, if a person’s mattress is in dire need of being thrown to the curb, a mattress topper will not help their situation at all.
From its discovery to use in the 1970’s and 80’s, the memory foam mattress is becoming the norm in mattress shopping. Having the knowledge and background of what makes a mattress better or worse than others can help someone save a few dollars, and a whole lot of sleepless nights because they made the wrong decision. Whether it is as simple as adding a mattress topper, or buying a whole new mattress, a little studying could save a person countless hours, and stress free mornings.
